The Importance of Being Earnest

Before we came to the Netherlands, many people advised us that the Dutch can be very frank, and foreigners can sometimes be a bit taken aback by this. I think it's fair to say that Paul was very taken aback when he went to the gym at our hotel and during his workout, the gym manager asked him "Would you like me to wash your shirt for you?" Paul thought this man was being genuinely kind and replied "No thanks, there is a coin washing machine and dryer in the hotel building". He was absolutely horrified when the man elaborated, that Paul's t-shirt had a smell when you don't dry your clothes properly and it's damp for too long. We encountered a few other instances of their blade-sharp frankness during the past week and realised that the next few years will be a skin thickening process for us. I think we'll be returning back to Oz with elephant skin. Having said that, there is definitely an upside. During my househunting expeditions, I have been gobsmacked to be told by agents, "yeah that house you just inspected - they want too much rent for what it's worth" or "that second bedroom is too small for the queen size bed you're shipping over". They were so honest about some of the negative aspects of the apartments instead of buttering it up. On the topic of househunting, the photo is an evening shot of 'S-Hertogenbosch (I have no idea how to pronounce it properly) also known as Den Bosch. This is the city where we are hoping to live. It's an hour south of Amsterdam.
Our past week ended on a high for Paul. He managed to get a ticket to Liverpool FC v Eindhoven PSV - a Champions League match in April. We're living in Eindhoven at the moment, so the match is at the local stadium. To quote Paul when he got the ticket, "This ticket is GOLD!!"

So far...

It's been an interesting first week in Holland. I have somehow managed to set our stovetop on fire in our serviced apartment that Paul had to extinguish, put our dirty washing and detergent (and paid my 3 euros) in the dryer instead of the washing machine, and given Paul a nervous breakdown as I drove a manual car (I'm an auto driver) on the right side of the road!! Oh yeah, there's one more thing, I bought a carton of sour milk instead of regular milk, not quite the same when you're having cereal for brekky. But hey, everything's in dutch over here, and really, why would you sell sour milk at the supermarket?

We have been trying to immerse ourselves into the dutch life (perhaps an Aussie take on it, anyway) and so yes, we have a jar of pickled herring in the fridge, 2 vases of tulips in our apartment, a block of gouda in the fridge and chocolate sprinkles in our pantry to put on the bread. Having said that, I'm certainly craving a bowl of fabulous spicy laksa. Haven't yet found any places here that sell it, will have to live in my dreams in the meantime.

Today we went to the Phillips Stadium in Eindhoven, home of the football team PSV Eindhoven. We had a tour of the grounds, including the glam corporate areas and even the changing rooms. The PSV players were entering the changing room for a training session as we were doing our tour so we got up close and personal with them. We were about a metre away from a player, Patrick Kluivert, apparently he's a legend in the football world. Quite a spunk, really!! Then we watched the team train. The fan club were there and letting of flares and fireworks during the training session. Was really cool!!

Bye for now.

First Few Days in Holland

We have arrived safe and sound in Holland. After a brief stopover in Singapore to eat the local delights and say hello to family, we travelled 24 hours by planes and trains to get to Eindhoven in Holland. We're staying here for a month or so in a serviced apartment until we find more permanent accomodation.

The weather has been surprisingly sunny and bright over here. We were expecting grey and wet weather but thankfully spring has already arrived....

Our experiences so far...
Great Indonesian meal last night!
Flea market - found one by chance on our second day here and picked up a few bargains including these cool earthy soup bowls with your own handles.

Today we're off to Maastricht art fair. Will post pics soon.

Adios Melbourne

We've decided to set up a blog account to keep in touch with our friends and family that we're leaving behind in Oz and let you know what we're up to in the Netherlands!!

Today is our second last day in Melbourne. It's been quite hectic over the past few weeks with our recent wedding and then getting ready for the overseas move. We will be arriving in Amsterdam on Saturday morning.

So for those we are leaving behind...Adios Amigos.
